The Langoustine (Nephrops) sector in Scotland has been particularly badly impacted by COVID-19, with the loss of important domestic and export markets. These challenges have been further exacerbated by the lack of clarity regarding Brexit given that Langoustine is the most important shellfish species in terms of landed value and socio-economic importance to Scottish coastal communities and the

Nephrops are assessed across Europe as individual stocks in 34 functional units (FUs). This data combines the ICES functional units (based on ICES statistical rectangles), combined with the actual extent of the muddy sediment, in Scottish & adjacent waters, derived from sediment and This project is focused on Nephrops and builds on a previous project funded by FIS conducted by the same consortium which generated new data on survival of discarded Nephrops.

WoRMS (2021). Nephrops norvegicus (Linnaeus, 1758). Accessed at: http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=107254 on 2021-04-08 Nephrops is a genus of lobsters comprising a single extant species, Nephrops norvegicus, and several fossil species. It was erected by William Elford Leach in 1814, to accommodate N. norvegicus alone, which had previously been placed in genera such as Cancer, Astacus or Homarus. Nephrops norvegicus, also known as Norway lobster, scampi, langoustine or Dublin Bay prawn, is a decapod crustacean, closely related to lobster. Nephrops are found primarily in muddy sediments in which they build complex burrow systems. They grow up to around 25cm long.

The fishery for Norway lobsters Nephrops norvegicus began in the 1950s and has since become one of the most valuable assets of the Clyde Sea Area.

Nephrops fishery is also contributions to coastal employment and an important Scottish export. There are two main fishing gears that target Nephrops, one is mobile (trawling) and the other is static (creels). The vast majority (over 70%) of the fishing vessels targeting Nephrops are small scale (under 10 metres in length) creelers.
